Waiting On Your Long-Distance Movers: Three Tips To Help You Settle In

Blog

Long-distance moves can be complicated, and the delivery window for your long-distance movers can sometimes be several days or even a week after you've arrived in your new home. While you won't feel completely settled until your personal items arrive, there are a few ways you can feel more at home before the movers deliver your boxes and furniture. Here are some helpful tips to make this transition period easier for your family.

Ship Boxes To Yourself

If you're planning on flying to your new home, you won't be able to take a lot with you on the flight. Consider which essential items you'll need right away that you can't pack in your luggage. Visit your local post office or shipping company and send boxes filled with these items to your new home the day before you fly out. Ask about the expected delivery time to make sure you'll arrive before the boxes do. Here are some things to consider packing in the boxes you mail to yourself:

  • Pots and pans
  • Hangers and closet organizers
  • Extra bath towels
  • Small household tools

Set Aside Money For Must-Have Items

Some items may be cumbersome to ship, such as dinnerware and pillows. Instead of having these items mailed to you, set aside some money to spend on disposable or temporary replacements. Biodegradable paper plates and cups can come in handy for the first few days in your home, and an inexpensive set of pillows and sheets can help you stay cozy at night. Consider investing in inflatable mattresses for the family and keeping them neatly tucked away for overnight visitors or even camping trips later. You may also want to invest in new soaps and shampoos instead of having your existing bottles delivered by the moving crew. Remember to consider the cost of a card table and chairs, along with other temporary furnishings.

Pack Luggage Strategically

While you won't want to pay a lot in extra baggage fees when you fly, you'll want to try to pack as many essentials as you can in your luggage. Pack a train case with hair and makeup items and use a rolling duffel bag for jackets, shoes, and other bulky items. If you are flying together as a family, you can consolidate clothing by type into each suitcase. For example, a child's rolling suitcase provides the perfect space for hosiery and undergarments. A large upright suitcase comes in handy when packing bulky sweaters and denim jeans. Be sure you are aware of the weight limit for luggage before you arrive at the airport. You can use your bathroom scale as a guide to help make sure you don't go over the maximum allowable weight.
