What To Consider When Choosing Movers

Blog

A smooth move entails a lot of planning, careful packing, and picking the right movers. Hiring movers requires several things, and while many people will think of pricing as the determining factor, there are many other considerations involved. Here are some factors you ought to consider when choosing a moving company.

Moving Inventory

The ideal mover will take stock of all your belongings to determine the weight or bulk of your move. The mover will come to your premises in person or perform a virtual survey. The mover should inspect your storage places, like your drawers, cupboards, and garages.

Moreover, an estimator should inquire from you what you're planning to move to your new home. Therefore, make sure you inform the moving company what things you plan on moving. Take note that the mover's price will be premised upon the weight of your belongings and the space your items will take up in their truck.

Understand Mover Estimates

Movers provide two types of moving estimates; binding and non-binding estimates. A non-binding estimate means the price you're going to pay will be different from the estimated price that movers will tell you. This estimate is common with long-distance movers.

A binding estimate means that the quoted price is the one you're going to pay. With binding estimates, there are no unforeseen extra costs. It's advisable to go with a mover who offers binding estimates.

Verify Credentials

If your move is between states, a mover should have a number that has been provided by the Transportation Department. This acts like a license that authorizes commercial vehicles to transport passengers and haul cargo between states. Therefore, the moving company you're considering should provide a DOT number in its advertising and website.

Additionally, the mover should have a carrier number. This number is provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These requirements vary by jurisdiction. For example, 38 states require in-state movers to possess a federal DOT number. Make sure you research the recommended credentials for movers in your current state.

Determine Whether the Mover Uses a Subcontractor

Make sure you know whether the company uses its own resources or whether it's dealing with a subcontractor. If the mover subcontracts its work, make sure you verify the credentials of the subcontractor. You also need to be clear on the services provided by the sub-contractor.

Subcontracting is one reason many consumers complain about moving services. Subcontracting can lead to a lot of confusion whenever an issue arises regarding service delivery. It's preferable to work with a mover who doesn't subcontract their services.
