Unsentimental Discarding: How To Lighten The Load On Moving Day

Blog

Moving to a new home isn't just about getting all your possessions from point A to point B. The trick is to discard as much as possible from point A, leaving you with fewer possessions to pack and transport, and therefore less work for you and your movers. So what are some effective ways to get rid of the things you don't need?

Downsizing Your Furniture

You need to make the distinction between what you want and what you need. Sure there will be some overlaps, but there are going to be a fair few items that have no place in your new home (perhaps even literally). Are you downsizing your home? It might seem obvious, but it's easy to overlook—is all your furniture going to fit in your new home? Determine what will work in the new space, and what won't. Discard the rest, and try not to be sentimental. Sure, you could put it inside a storage unit just in case you'll ever need it again, but how likely is that?

Sweeten the Deal

Your closets and kitchen cabinets are likely candidates to find stuff you're not going to need in your new home. You'll probably be able to assemble a pile of clothing you don't wear anymore (and maybe don't even like anymore). The same can be true in your kitchen. Kitchen gadgets, flatware, cutlery, cookware—you can probably find a fair few items that haven't been used in years. If you're getting family and friends to help you pack, why not sweeten the deal? Allow them to take their pick of clothing, kitchen gadgets, and any other miscellaneous items that you don't need anymore. Anything leftover can be donated to charity.

Use It All Up

Staying in the kitchen for a moment, there's little point in moving many of the items in your cupboards and fridge. Think of the half-finished perishable food items. You're not exactly going to pack them into tupperware and load them into the moving truck, are you? But it's still a waste to throw them away. In the last days before you move, try to cook with what you have instead of eating out. This allows you to use up everything you have at home, reducing waste.

With some (unsentimental) discarding, you'll realize that you've significantly lightened the load for moving day. And of course, the less stuff you have to move, the easier it will be to unpack at the other end too.

Find Moving Tips for Your Family Here

I try to keep my living expenses down to save money for my family. But when we faced moving from one state to another last year, I didn't know how to do so without breaking my budget. Fortunately, a relative of mine suggested that I ask a moving contractor for help. The contractor helped me plan a moving strategy that not only saved me money on boxes, supplies and transportation, they also provided tips on how to make the move easier once we arrived to our destination. I learned so much about moving that I developed this blog. I offer tips on how to move on a budget, select the right moving supplies and even how to pack your belongings properly. If you're ready to get started, keep reading. Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your move.
